Stop Snoring Tips Archives

Sleep. A time when the body relaxes, recharges and heals. But not all of us are resting easily. According to the National Commission on Sleep Disorders, one in six Americans, suffers from some degree of sleep apnea.

When we sleep, the air passages shrink, and eventually become blocked. In some people, it will be a mild narrowing; and in some people it will be complete obstruction, so that the air will not get into the lung from the air passages. There are several symptoms. One is excessive sleepiness; they just don’t want to wake up. Some people wake up with a headache and a dry mouth. Then they have a lack of energy.

Because the severity of sleep apnea was not recognized by the medical community until recently, only a fraction of sufferers have been diagnosed. Common methods of treatment include sleeping on breathing machines and surgery to enlarge the air way.

Because the surgeries can come with complications and there can be issues to deal with post-op and because the equipment can be cumbersome; it would be nice to have a simplistic solution.

Working towards that end, a new jaw supporting device has been designed to help reduce snoring, and the symptoms associated with obstructive sleep apnea. It works at retraining the tissue and muscles around the mouth, to stay closed while sleeping.

Ultimately, it is just helping you keep your mouth substantially closed while you are sleeping. It is keeping the jaw substantially supported, so it can’t collapse backwards, and your tongue can’t collapse back and close off your air. It does not work for everybody; it is not a Cure All for obstructive sleep apnea. But, we have a very high success rate.

I guess I was thinking that I was not getting enough sleep at night, I was waking up constantly. So, I just figured that I would have it checked out. They found out that I had sleep apnea. The device does help out a lot. Now I seem to get up and feel just fine in the morning, whereas I am not near as tired as I used to be.

In the limited pilot study that we did, which involved eleven patients; we have had very positive results with the majority. The patients have reported that they have been feeling better, one patient in particular. This technology has great potential.

Further research shows that if not treated correctly, sleep disorders may open the door to other health problems.

It may lead in to stroke, blood pressure, diabetes, depression; all those are there as far as from the medical stand point. It has been estimated that an average American needs at least seven and a half hours of sleep, every night on a consistent basis. Even one night’s sleep deprivation can lead to sleepiness, lack of interest, concentration problems, productivity will go down. So that is extremely important.

For those who suffer from a sleep disorder, resting out tired bodies can some times turn into a nightmare. But, continued changes on how we address mechanical problems may help us lay our apprehensions to rest and put some of our health problems to bed.

Strengthen Your Breath and Weaken Your Snore

If you have a difficult time with snoring at night, it may be because you’re not breathing enough during the day.  Most people fail to recognize the connection between these two things.  The fact of the matter is, there are many different reasons why we might be snoring but if we are not breathing properly during the day and exercising this part of our body, we may have a difficult time with snoring at night.  At the very least, exercising our breathing patterns during the day is going to help us with our snoring if not eliminate it entirely.

The first thing that you should do is to practice deep breathing exercises every day.  Whenever you are relaxed, breathe normally and take note of how you are breathing.  If you are breathing is shallow and your chest is moving in and out, you’re not breathing properly.  If you are using your diaphragm and you notice that your stomach is going in and out while you are breathing, you are breathing properly.  Regardless of how you breathe, shallow or deeply, you should work on consciously improving this regularly.  Remember, breath is life and if you’re able to get more breath into your body, your life will improve in many different ways.

You may also want to work on improving your breathing by doing specific breathing exercises.  For example, spend a few minutes several times a day breathing in very deeply through your nose and then exhaling slowly through your mouth.  Not only will this help to exercise this part of your body and may reduce your snoring considerably, it will also help you to get additional oxygen which will raise your level of alertness and may actually help you to lose some weight.  Schedule two or three times during the day in order to do this and you will notice some changes in how well you sleep at night.

There are also some other specific deep breathing exercises that you may want to try.  Starting out slowly, however, will allow your body to acclimate to the new type of breathing that you are doing.  Most people recognize differences within a day or two and sometimes immediately after starting these types of exercises.  Try them for yourself and see if they don’t improve the amount and type of snoring that you do on a nightly basis.

Stop Snoring by Fixing Food Allergies

Allergies are one of the biggest problems that we have which cause snoring.  Although carrying around excess weight and drinking alcohol also are two of the big problems which make us more, you would be surprised with how many times the snoring originates with allergies.  When most of us think about these allergies, we tend to think about things that we breathe in through our nose during the day.  Yes, these do make a difference in our lives but you cannot overlook the food allergies that you have as well.

Almost everybody has food allergies, at least to a certain extent.  I know people who have food allergies to shellfish and nuts that are so serious that even taking one bite could kill them.  How do they react to the problems with food allergies that they have?  Their throat closes up and they have asthma like symptoms.  They also tend to swell in various parts of their body.  Even though most of us do not have food allergies to this extent, we may have them to the extent that they are causing us a lot of harm and making us snore.

The next time you go out to eat, make sure you are aware of the way that you feel.  You may also be allergic to a lot of the foods that you eat at home without realizing it.  Did you ever notice that your nose tends to run whenever you eat or perhaps that you have to clear your throat after eating?  Most of us consider this to be perfectly normal behavior but believe it or not, it actually is because we are dealing with a food allergy.  If you don’t believe me, try this simple test.  The next time you have a difficult time and need to clear your throat after eating, stick a large pinch of salt under your tongue and chase it down with a glass of water.  If the desire to clear your throat goes away after just a few moments, you have a food allergy.

Identifying and overcoming food allergies can really help us to overcome our snoring as well.  Since these allergies tend to create mucus in our body and close our throat, it is easy to see why they would also cause us to snore.  If you are unable to avoid the foods that you are allergic to all together, try taking some salt and water before going to bed.  You might just find that you are snoring less with such a simple remedy.

Exercise for a Great Night Sleep

There are a lot of different reasons why we snore.  For some of us, it is because we are overweight and this can restrict our breathing to a certain extent while we are sleeping.  For others, it is because we don’t breathe deeply enough during the day and this can make it difficult for us to breathe properly at night.  Regardless of why we have a problem with snoring, however, exercise is something that should be done as it helps in almost every case.  What kind of exercise, however, is best to help silence your snoring?

If you are having problems with snoring because you are overweight, you would be better to focus on interval training and weight lifting rather than long-term aerobic exercises.  The reason why this is the case is because these are going to help you to burn fat faster and at the same time, increase your breathing capacity.  By building up the larger muscles of the body which are found in the legs and core, you will be burning more calories, even while you are resting.  This helps to burn fat from your body without adding mass to your neck area which will restrict your breathing to a certain extent.

If you do not have a problem with weight but still have a problem with snoring, you might want to consider doing some long-term aerobic exercises.  Running, swimming and even walking are good examples of this type of exercise.  These will help to increase the capacity of your lungs and exercise this part of your body along with exercising the rest of it.  This will help you to sleep better and more soundly, along with helping you with your snoring problem.

One thing that you might want to be cautious about, however, is exercising if you have a heart condition.  Sleep apnea which is often associated with snoring can cause heart problems and in the case of some types of sleep apnea, may actually be a symptom of heart problems.  If you feel that you have a problem with your heart or health, make sure that you talk to your doctor before going on to any type of exercise programs such as this.  More than likely, they will be able to guide you to a healthy form of exercising that will not compromise your life in the process.

One of the main reasons why we snore at night is because we have a problem with allergies.  Most of us realize that we are allergic to something, usually something that is in the air around our home.  During the day, we are subjected to various types of allergens that include everything from tree pollen to dog dander.  The one place that we don’t want to be subjected to these allergens is whenever we enter into the bedroom.  Why is that the case?

Whenever we sleep, we naturally breathe deeper and this can pull any allergens that are in your bedroom more deeply into your sinuses and lungs.  Even those of us who have a very light allergy and are able to deal with it without much trouble will recognize that we are more affected during the night than we are during the day.  If you find that you are snoring regularly then you might need to do something in order to get these allergens out of your bedroom.  Believe it or not, there may be a culprit in this case that you have not considered before.

Our hair works like a magnet for pollen and during the day, all of the pollen that comes into contact with our hair is going to stick in it to a certain extent.  If you have long hair, you can be breathing the pollen all through the night directly from your hair but even if your hair is short, it will transfer to the pillow and then right into your lungs.  That is why it’s important to make sure that you wash your hair thoroughly every night before going to bed.  It may seem like a simple thing but this is certainly something that you should do and can make a large difference in how much you snore.

Other allergens should also be removed from the bedroom in one way or another.  Do not put cologne on before going to bed and trying to avoid any type of scented soaps or shampoos.  If the dog sleeps in the bedroom with you, make other arrangements so that you are not breathing the dander through the night.  Above all, get a high quality air filter for your bedroom so that you are breathing clean air while you are sleeping.  By taking these steps and reducing the amount of allergens that are in your bedroom, you will have the best chance to have a snore free night.

Most of us have heard about histamines but did you realize that they are actually a good thing?  Unfortunately, we are often given antihistamines because of difficulties that they cause in our body.  The fact of the matter is, histamines are released by our body for natural reasons but often they are released in numbers that cause problems for us.  One of the problems that they cause is congestion, both in our lungs, throat and nose.  This can have a side affect of snoring if we have a difficulty with too many histamines at night.

If you want to see evidence of histamines effect on your body, try being aware of how you feel after you eat or drink something.  Often, histamines are released in such a large number because we do not have the proper chemicals to balance out the potassium and some allergens that we are taking and whenever we eat.  One of the most powerful, natural anti-histamines is salt.  If you find that you’re clearing your throat or if you get the sniffles whenever you eat or drink something, try putting a pinch of salt under your tongue and watch to see what happens.  The salt does not cover over the problem of the histamines, such as commercial antihistamines but it balances it out and takes the problem of excess mucus away.

If you have this problem at night, and many of us do, it will cause you to have a stuffy nose and to breathe through your mouth.  This is one of the main causes of snoring and can not only be annoying for those that have to listen to it, it may also be at the root of another more serious problem, sleep apnea.  Sleep apnea is whenever you stop breathing for periods of time during the night.  If someone has told you that they have recognized this sleep pattern in you and you tend to feel tired during the day, you might have this problem.

Being able to balance out the natural histamines in our body is one way that you can fight back against excess mucus and the difficulties that it causes.  If you do nothing else, try taking a large pinch of sea salt and chasing it down with a glass of water before you go to sleep at night.  It may help to balance out your allergies to the extent that snoring is not such a problem.

De-Stress for Snore Stopping Success

There are a lot of different reasons why we snore but one that is often overlooked is because of the stress that we are dealing with during the day.  Stress is a very odd thing and it can affect our physical health as well as our mental health.  Believe it or not, much of the snoring that we do can be overcome if we are able to calm down and avoid some of the stress that we are dealing with during the day.  Although it may not be the only thing that is necessary in order to cure our snoring, it certainly will help us to get a better night’s sleep.

The first thing that you need to do in order to destress to stop snoring is to avoid some of the stressful situations that you are dealing with.  This is not always possible because all of us have to work and work is often what is at the root of many of our stresses.  Instead of getting away from the things that stress us, we often need to learn how to deal with them effectively so that we do not carry that stress around with us all day long.  Even practicing some deep breathing exercises will not only help you to calm down during the day but it will help to improve your breathing which will also improve your snoring.

Unfortunately, stress seems to be a vicious circle as far as our sleep pattern is concerned.  If we are stressed out during the day, our body will release hormones that may keep us from falling asleep quickly or deeply.  Without the proper amount of deep sleep, both from these hormones and from the snoring that they cause we will not be able to function properly over the next day.  This starts a cycle of sleep deprivation that only makes things worse as far as our sleeping is concerned.

If you find that stress seems to be a problem for you, the most important time for you during the day should be the hour before you go to sleep.  Take the time to turn off the television set and do a little bit of meditation, perhaps including a warm bath and aromatherapy.  Don’t allow yourself to be stressed out before you go to bed and you might just find that you have a silent night’s sleep as a result.

Sleep Apnea – Silencing a Killer

If you have a problem with snoring, you may have more of a problem than you bargained for in the first place.  Snoring itself can be quite annoying, not only to those who suffer from it and don’t get a proper night’s sleep but to those who have to listen to it regularly.  There may be a problem, however, that can cause quite a lot of health problems along with it.  This is sleep apnea and it goes much further than snoring alone.  If you are suffering from this problem, there are some things that you can do about it.

Sleep apnea actually comes in 2 different types.  Obstructive sleep apnea occurs whenever the muscles in your throat relax and end up blocking your ability to breathe.  Central sleep apnea has to do with your brain not sending the proper breathing signals to you and you end up not breathing for periods of time at night.  Regardless of which type of sleep apnea you have, however, there are some natural things that you can do in order to overcome it.  It is a serious situation and should be treated as such.  If you realize that you have sleep apnea, do everything in your power to overcome it.

The most important thing that you can do in order to overcome the problem with snoring and sleep apnea is to change your lifestyle to a certain extent.  One of the largest culprits as far as sleep apnea is concerned is excess weight on your body so make sure that you’re not carrying around the extra weight that you don’t have to.  Another thing that you would want to do is to avoid alcohol before bedtime as this could make your sleep apnea and snoring worse.

It might also be how you are sleeping that is causing you to snore and have sleep apnea. Many people only have this problem when they are sleeping on their backs so sleeping on your side or even your stomach may have a positive impact on how much quality sleep you are getting. Keeping your nasal passages clear with some saline spray may also help you to breathe better and not to rely so much on breathing through your mouth. It may take some effort on your part to overcome sleep apnea but it will be well worth the effort when you are able to do so.

It always seems that the dog is getting blamed for something, especially for things that they aren’t guilty of in the first place.  If you find that you are storing at night and you have a dog in the room with you, however, you might actually be able to legitimately blame the dog for your problems.  No, it’s not that the dog is snoring and you are getting blamed for it but it might just be that the dog is causing you to store so ultimately, it is his fault.  Let’s take a look at why this might be the case.

You might be surprised to find out just how common dog allergies are.  Many people who are dog owners suffer from dog allergies don’t even realize it.  They may simply dismiss some of the more common symptoms, such as burning eyes, a stuffy nose and perhaps even snoring as being something that is fairly common.  The simple fact of the matter is, these things are not common and they should be looked into if you’re suffering from them.  You might find out that you are actually allergic to your dog but if you do, what are you going to do about it?

Very few of us who are allergic to our dogs are going to be willing to get rid of them because of it.  For that reason, we need to find another way to take care of the situation so we are not suffering needlessly.  The first thing that you need to do is to banish the dog from your bedroom at night.  Whenever you are sleeping, you breathe much deeper and that means that you are breathing the allergens from the dog dander in much more deeply as well.  If you do not have the dog in the bedroom, that will not become an issue.

You may also want to consider getting a high quality air filter for your bedroom as this will do a lot of good in removing the allergens from your sleeping area.  You can also do some things with the dog to make the dander less of a problem.  Giving him a bath on a regular basis, perhaps once a week can do wonders.  You should also make sure that you’re brushing him regularly and that you include some high-quality fats in his diet as this will keep him from shedding regularly.

Is Your Snoring Chronic?

There may be times whenever we have a difficult time with snoring and it seems to come and go.  There are other times, however, when our snoring becomes chronic and it may seem that it is never going to stop.  Although most of us do not necessarily mind snoring, it can certainly cause a lot of problems if somebody else needs to sleep in the same room with us.  For that reason, we might want to find a way to stop snoring for good.  The problem is, if we are dealing with chronic snoring, it has become a lifelong problem that is not easy to overcome.

One of the first things that you should look into whenever you’re dealing with chronic snoring is if you’re having a problem with sinusitis.  Sinusitis is difficulties with the sinuses and it also is a chronic condition.  Most of us think that snoring always resonates from our throat but the fact of the matter is, it may also have a lot to do with our sinuses as well.  Depending on the type of snoring that we do, having our sinuses clogged up on a regular basis may simply make it worse.

There are medications that can be taken for sinusitis but unfortunately, they also come with some very strong side effects.  It is possible in many cases for you to cure your sinusitis and your snoring permanently with a little bit of natural remedies as well.  Most people don’t realize that the sinuses stretch well up into the forehead and are actually rather large cavities in the area of our face.  If we have a difficult time with allergies, pollen can easily collect in our sinuses and remain there for a long period of time.  During the night whenever we breathe deeply, it may also become a problem.

If you want to clear out your sinuses in order to see if that helps with your snoring, the easiest way for you to do this is by rinsing your sinuses using a neti pot.  Although many people would consider this to be an unsavory option, the sensation is actually a pleasant one once you get used to it.  You would probably be surprised as well with how much debris will come out of your sinuses whenever you rinse them.  Try this for a few days and see if your snoring does not improve as a result.
